Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Genetics

IMIM (Institut Hospital del Mar d’Investigacions Mèdiques). Barcelona

This is a multidisciplinary group of researchers with experience in epidemiology, cardiology, internal medicine, genetics and bioinformatics applied to the study cardiovascular diseases. The group's primary research lines include genetic architecture, lifestyle factors, and clinical epidemiology:

  • Genetic architecture of cardiovascular diseases and their classic risk factors, identifying the genetic variants associated with various cardiovascular phenotypes and analyzing the importance of gene:gene and gene:environment interactions in modulating cardiovascular risk. We are also using these genetic study results to determine whether there are causal relationships between various biomarkers and cardiovascular diseases. We have a large collection of biological samples (n>13,000 individuals representative of the population) and maintain active international collaborations.
  • Lifestyles and their relationship to cardiovascular health. A very active line of research is related to physical activity, analyzing the relationship between various types of exercise and their beneficial or harmful health effects.
  • Clinical epidemiology, analyzing trends in the management and prognosis of patients with acute myocardial infarction. Participation in national and international registries of patients with coronary syndrome allows the group to analyze patient characteristics and the effectiveness of various treatments at the population level.

The group's primary objective is to translate the knowledge acquired and improve the cardiovascular health of patients and of the general population. This translational concept is supported by collaborations and agreements with public agencies and private enterprise. The group has participated in the development of public health plans and of patents that are currently in the commercial development phase.
