Vitamin K antagonists were the only oral anticoagulants available for several decades, but they require frequent coagulation monitoring and dose adjustment. The direct oral anticoagulants rivaroxaban , dabigatran, apixaban, and, most recently, edoxaban have been approved for the management of specific thromboembolic indications.
